I must admit this is not exactly breaking news, but it is still very relevant and I hope it's news to you.

In late November during the Biofabricate conference in New York, Adidas presented a prototype of a biodegradable sneaker. The "Futurecraft Biofabric" prototype is created from Biosteel fibers in collaboration with the german biotech company, AMSlik. The biosteel fiber is a sustainable innovation within material technology, it is completely biodegradable high performance fiber that is extracted from the same proteins that spiders use to strengthen their web. Pretty cool huh?

Not only are the fibers 15% lighter than traditional materials but they also have the potential to be the strongest natural fiber out there.

Other benefits include breathability and its ability to conduct moisture.

With this innovation Adidas has created a prototype that can decompose in water with 36 hours, with the help of an enzyme concentration. The enzyme is a necessary part of the decomposing process of the prototype and will therefore still be wearable on a rainy day, and that's especially important if you like me live on the east coast.

The "Futurecraft Biofabric" is just one of Adidas's recent innovations and this project showcases Adidas's focus on sustainability. The company is planning on exploring the use of the material beyond footwear to other of their performance products.

James Carnes, Adidas CEO Vice President of Strategy and Creation states:

"We are moving beyond closed loop and into an infinite loop – or even no loop at all. This is a pioneering stride forward beyond sustainability into a new territory of bionic innovation."

This material could be used in a variety of other apparel and footwear products and it's hopefully only a question of time before other brand follow in Adidas's fast

footsteps with similar biodegradable products.

Adidas again proves they are frontrunners in the athleisure market with their continous material innovations and cool sneaker designs we are ready to run to the stores to get.

Adidas have yet to disclose when this sneaker will come into production.

I know I'm exited, are you? Let me know in the comments!
